The National Democratic Congress is considering Agogo in the Asante Akyem North Municipality as the venue for this year’s June 4 commemoration to honour the late Paramount Chief, Nana Okuoko Sarpong.

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, disclosed this during a thank-you tour of the area, where he addressed traditional leaders at the Agogo Palace.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia noted that although Ghana’s Constitution bars chiefs from active partisan politics, the late Nana Okuoko Sarpong was open about his support for the NDC and deserved recognition for his stance.

He also appealed to party supporters who are frustrated over job opportunities to remain patient, assuring them that the government is working to stabilise the economy and create employment. He urged members to continue engaging communities to retain public trust and secure a renewed mandate in future elections.

Touching on governance, Mr. Asiedu Nketia said the District Assemblies Common Fund is now disbursed directly to district assemblies, irrespective of the political affiliation of Members of Parliament. He added that assembly members are now receiving stipends to ease financial challenges.

On development, he highlighted the government’s “Big Push” infrastructure agenda, which aims to rehabilitate poor road networks, including the Agogo–Mame Krobo–Afram Plains stretch. He further indicated plans to consult the President on naming a road in Agogo after the late chief.

He also announced a proposal to establish a 24-hour economy market in Agogo, which would include facilities such as a police station, hospital and kindergarten.

The District Chief Executive, Sarah Amoakoah, commended the President for appointing more women to key positions in government. She outlined ongoing development projects in the municipality, including road rehabilitation, construction of six three-unit classroom blocks annually, two Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds each year, and the drilling of 10 boreholes annually, with five already completed.

Chairman of the event, Nana Kofi Nti, praised the government for what he described as equitable distribution of national resources to the Asante Akyim North area. He reaffirmed the community’s support for the government while appealing for further improvements in road infrastructure.
