Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has made a passionate appeal to the Canadian Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Martine Moreau, to renew the Modernizing Agriculture in Ghana (MAG) program.
According to the minister, the move will enable his ministry to continue providing support to farmers.
The MAG program, which started in 2017, is a five-year, 135 million Canadian dollars (CAD) initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada to provide budgetary support and technical assistance to the Government of Ghana to improve the production and productivity of farmers by supporting the implementation of a comprehensive market-oriented approach to farming.
With the programme about to end this year, Hon. Bryan Acheampong made a passionate appeal for a renewal of the program to enable us to continue to provide the needed support to farmers even as the Ministry rolls out an enhanced PFJ program for the next five (5) years.
The reviewed programme will provide an input credit system to farmers. Owning to its sound and well-defined objectives, as well as guaranteed government support, it is expected that, the entry point for farmer participation will be lowered for more enrollment.
The ministry has the firm conviction that its transformation agenda for agriculture can be achieved, given the new focus and orientation of elevating agriculture from obsolescence and a subsistence way of life to a new mindset that perceives agriculture as a business.
