The Ahafo Ano South-West District Assembly has planted palm trees at mining sites at Kunsu after their reclamation.

The exercise which was led by the District Chief Executive (DCE) Mr. Joseph Frimpong Bonsu has been replicated in other mining areas within the district.

The Assembly has so far planted 300,000 trees as part of the Green Ghana Project.

200,000 out of the number have been planted within the Tano-Offin Forest Reserve whereas the remaining 100,000 was distributed to individuals to plant in their various farms and places of residence.

Speaking exclusively to Republic Press, Mr. Bonsu said the assembly is determined that the natural forest cover in the district is preserved.

He made the above statement following the drastic decline of Ghana’s forest cover all owing to illegal mining, illegal logging, urbanization, among others.

The government official bemoaned how human activities have led to the destruction of several hectares of Ghana’s forest.

He therefore advised residents especially farmers to refrain from activities that will impact negatively on the forest cover of the district.
