Ahanta West Assembly rejects NDC petition against MCE

Assembly Members of the Ahanta West Municipal Assembly have rejected a petition seeking the removal of Municipal Chief Executive Ebenezer Aidoo.

In a statement dated February 23, 2026, and signed by Presiding Member Isaac Simmons Bassaw, the Members made it clear they had no hand in the petition forwarded to President John Dramani Mahama by some constituency executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The February 12, 2026, petition, submitted by the NDC executives, invoked Article 243(3) of the 1992 Constitution and urged the President to revoke the MCE’s appointment over what they described as misconduct, corruption, and administrative incompetence.

Among the allegations were claims that Mr. Aidoo locked up the Assembly Hall to block a meeting convened by the Presiding Member, an act the petitioners said amounted to an abuse of authority and disrespect toward the General Assembly.

They further accused him of releasing confiscated excavators linked to illegal mining without due process and alleged the use of security personnel to extort money from illegal miners, supported by what they described as video and mobile money evidence.

The petition also cited concerns over the award of contracts, including the Busua-Dixcove Bridge project and aspects of the School Feeding Programme, as well as alleged interference in chieftaincy matters and questionable expenditure involving road machinery and hired equipment.

However, the Assembly Members distanced themselves from those claims, stressing that they neither endorsed nor contributed to the petition.

According to the statement, any earlier tensions between the MCE and the Assembly have since been addressed through internal engagement.

“We wish to state unequivocally that the General Assembly was not consulted on the said petition,” the statement said, adding that the working relationship between Members and the MCE remains intact.

The Members indicated that a formal resolution has been endorsed to affirm their confidence in Mr. Aidoo’s leadership and to signal their support for his continued tenure.

They maintained that collaboration within the Assembly is ongoing and expressed commitment to stability and development in the municipality despite the controversy stirred by the petition.
