The legal representative for Daniel Owusu Koranteng, a suspect in the murder case of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, has condemned the charges brought against his client, calling them “shambolic” and lacking any concrete evidence.
Kofi Essel, the defense lawyer, accused authorities of engaging in a politically motivated witch-hunt after the Madina District Court formally charged Koranteng with murder.
The charge came after initial discussions of abetment, with prosecutors alleging that Koranteng was near Suale’s Madina residence when the journalist was fatally shot in January 2019.
However, Essel dismissed the prosecution’s claims as baseless, arguing that there is no credible evidence linking his client to the crime.
“The police hurriedly put a charge together on the offense of murder. First, they were talking about abetment, now we are talking about a surprise charge sheet of one count of murder. They prayed to the court to remand our client with no basis. I describe this as a shambolic charge sheet,” Essel stated.
He further alleged that the case was driven by ulterior motives rather than facts.
“They have nothing on our client. It is just a multitude of allegations based on hearsay. This is all about boosting someone’s career at the expense of another person’s freedom. It is a witch-hunt, and we are prepared to challenge it,” he added.
