Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner Crashes After Takeoff in Ahmedabad. Here’s what we know as of now:

A London-bound Air India Boeing 787 (Flight AI 171) crashed shortly after departing from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, 2025, descending into the Meghani area and producing a large plume of black smoke

The aircraft was carrying 242 people—230 passengers, two pilots, and 10 cabin crew—under the command of Capt. Sumeet Sabharwal and First Officer Clive Kundar

A single passenger, seated in 11A, miraculously survived out of the 241 people on board; he walked away with minor injuries and is currently hospitalized.

This is the first crash of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner

According to data from Flightradar24, the initial ADS-B data from flight AI171 shows that the aircraft reached a maximum barometric altitude of 625 feet (airport altitude is about 200 feet) and then it started to descend with a vertical speed of -475 feet per minute

The crew issued a MAYDAY call immediately after takeoff, before all radar and ATC contact was lost

Emergency teams, including NDRF and local fire and ambulance services, were quickly deployed, and hospitals have been put on standby while rescue operations continue

The DGCA and Boeing are expected to launch a full technical investigation. The heavily fueled long-haul flight is believed to have intensified the post-crash fire

Air India confirmed the incident via statement and activated a support centre for families, while airport operations remain suspended until further notice

There were 169 Indian nationals on the flight, as well as 53 Britons, one Canadian national, and seven Portuguese nationals, Air India says

There is no word on the number of casualties or any word of survivors at this time.
