Akandoh assembles leadership of health sector for two-day retreat

In a quest to maximize productivity in the health sector to provide quality and efficient health care delivery to the people of Ghana, Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has assembled the leadership of the health sector for a two day retreat at Ada.

The leadership was made up of the Chief Director and Directors of the Ministry of Health, Board Members and Chairmen, Heads of Agencies, Individuals from Civil Society organizations and other invited guests.

The meeting is dubbed: “Ministry of Health 2025 Performance Review and Outlook for 2026”The programme includes comprehensive review sessions on sectoral performance, presentations from directorates and agencies, thematic discussions, and forward planning for 2026.

Participants are expected to evaluate achievements recorded in 2025, identify operational bottlenecks, align sector priorities, and strengthen coordination across institutions.

The retreat officially opened today Monday, 12th January 2026, with opening remarks from the Chief Director and an address by the Minister of Health.

Presentations are being delivered over two days by various MoH Directorates, including Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation; Human Resource for Health; Infrastructure; Training and Capacity Development; Technical Assistance and Donor Coordination; and others. Agencies such as the Ghana Health Service, National Health Insurance Authority, Food and Drugs Authority, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, and Tamale Teaching Hospital are also presenting their performance reports and institutional outlooks.The retreat further features presentations from regulatory bodies and professional councils, including the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Medical and Dental Council, Allied Health Professions Council, Pharmacy Council, and others, providing a holistic review of the sector’s regulatory and service delivery mandate.

The 2026 strategic planning segment, to be led by the Minister focuses on sector priorities, policy direction, and collaborative actions required to accelerate progress toward Universal Health Coverage, improve access to essential services, and strengthen system resilience.

Through this initiative, the Ministry seeks to foster high-performance standards, enhance resource efficiency, ensure evidence-based decision-making, and promote cross-agency collaboration in service delivery.

The Ministry reiterates its commitment to building a strong, responsive, and people-centered health system capable of addressing both current needs and emerging public health threats.
