The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has directed the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) to step aside pending investigations into a recent fire incident at the Akosombo power control centre.
The directive forms part of immediate measures taken by government in response to the incident, which has raised concerns about the safety and reliability of critical power infrastructure.
The announcement was made by the Minister in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu also disclosed that there has been a major shake-up in the leadership of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region, although details of the changes were not immediately provided.
Meanwhile, Mr. Jinapor is expected to address the media at a major briefing scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, where he will outline recent developments in electricity distribution and provide further clarity on the ongoing situation.
The developments come amid growing public interest in the stability of Ghana’s power sector, particularly following the incident at the Akosombo facility.
Government is expected to use the upcoming briefing to reassure the public and outline steps being taken to safeguard the country’s energy infrastructure.
