Ghanaian employees at the Akroma Gold Mines have demonstrated against the Chinese employers at Esase, a suburb of Kwahu West District of the Eastern Region, over their human rights abuses and bad working conditions.
Their agitation follows a recent incident that happened between a Ghanaian translator and Chinese where the Chinese threatened the Ghanaian with a gun.
According to a report, the Chinese national who is a senior in the Akroma Gold Mines company had a misunderstanding with a Ghanaian called Charles Boateng.
Narrating the incident to the media, the source said a Ghanaian- Chinese, Charles Boateng who is a translator for the Akroma Gold Mines, had a misunderstanding with the Chinese national, and in the ensuing process, the Chinese allegedly punched him and when he tried defending himself, the Chinese further run into his car with a top speed to pick a gun in the heat of the argument. The source further revealed that the Chinese attempted to shoot the Ghanaian. “He would have been dead by now if he had not run for his life”. The narration said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Jerry Kwabena Andoh,_deputy general secretary of the Ghana Union of Mines under the TUC who represented the workers from national level intervened in the demonstration to restore calm. But despite the calm restoration, the demonstrators later proceeded to the foreigners and the management to demand a crackdown on the rampant abuse of the Ghanaian workers. They additionally sought for good working conditions for their members in the company henceforth.
