President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has commissioned the second phase of the Tema Motorway Interchange, marking the third major interchange inauguration in two weeks.

The milestone follows the opening of the Flowerpot Interchange on November 19 and the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange on November 29.

Describing the Tema project as “another symbol of our nation’s progress,” President Akufo-Addo highlighted its importance in improving traffic flow, easing goods clearance at Tema Harbour, and fostering trade and economic growth in the ECOWAS sub-region.

The second phase of the interchange, completed on schedule by JFE Engineering Corporation under the supervision of CTI Engineering International, includes a third-tier flyover stretching from the Total fuel station at Tema Community 9 to the Ashaiman Timber Market.

This addition provides a dedicated route for thorough traffic from Tema Harbour to Akosombo, eliminating congestion and reducing delays.

“This project underscores our vision to alleviate persistent traffic congestion on this critical corridor and enhance Ghana’s position as a hub for regional trade,” the President stated. He noted the project complements other infrastructure investments, such as the expansion of the 64km Tema-Akosombo corridor, further integrating key centers of commerce and industry.

The $57-million project was funded through a grant from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the largest of its kind extended to Ghana. President Akufo-Addo emphasized that the successful partnership between Ghana and Japan reflects the strength of international collaboration.

Minister for Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso Boakye, praised the project as a game-changer for Ghana’s transportation sector and announced plans to establish a robust maintenance system to preserve the infrastructure. He urged all stakeholders to play their part in safeguarding the facility.

The Tema Motorway Interchange is expected to enhance traffic flow, facilitate trade, and stimulate economic activity both within Ghana and across the ECOWAS region, cementing its place as a defining moment in Ghana’s infrastructure development.
