President Akufo-Addo has cut sod for the construction of Sports Infrastructure to host the 2023 African Games In Ghana at Borteyman in Accra.

At the sod-cutting ceremony to commence the construction of the edifice which will host some games at the 13th edition of the 2023 African Games at Borteyman, a community located within the Kpone Katamanso District in the Greater Accra Region, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said it will be constructed into a stadium complex and university for sports and development, after a successful hosting of the games.

The Complex will be fitted with a one thousand (1,000) seater competition swimming pool, that is a 10-lane competition swimming pool; an 8-lane warm-up swimming pool; a one thousand (1,000) seater multi-purpose sports hall for basketball, badminton, boxing, table tennis and weightlifting; and a five-hundred-seater (500) temporary dome for handball, volleyball, judo, karate and taekwondo.

The rest are a five (5) tennis court complex, including a one thousand-seater (1000) centre court; a 6-lane warm-up athletics track; one FIFA standard football training field; and a 6-kilometre single lane road, and a 3-kilometre double lane road.

On his part, the Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif stated that his predecessor Hon Isaac Kwame Asiamah begun the process of bidding for the rights to host the games and the facilitation of the sports infrastructure.

He noted that government has decided to adopt a hybrid approach towards hosting the games after carefully considering many factors, including the drawback of the construction schedule and preparations due to the devastating effects of Covid-19.

He explained that the hybrid approach will afford the opportunity to leverage on existing infrastructure at the University of Ghana and construct some new facilities at Borteyman.

He expressed appreciation to the president, the sports fraternity and the entire staff of the Youth and Sports Ministry for their unflinching support towards the bidding process and the commitment to host the best event in the history of the Games.
