Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic deaths of six young women during a military recruitment stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra on Thursday, November 12, 2025.

The tragedy occurred when thousands of hopeful applicants converged on the venue for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise, leading to a stampede that left six dead and several others critically injured.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, November 13, the former president said he was devastated by the news upon returning from Angola.

“I convey to the bereaved families my deep condolences and wish the potential recruits in hospital a rapid recovery from their injuries and the trauma of the incident,” he wrote.

Akufo-Addo also extended his thoughts to all those affected, including the victims’ families and loved ones, offering prayers for comfort and strength.

“It is my hope that each day will bring renewed strength. May the Lord be with us all in this difficult moment,” he added.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the suspension of the recruitment exercise in Accra, and Acting Defence Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has promised a full investigation into the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
