President Nana Akufo-Addo has promised Ghana’s only medalists at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, Samuel Takyi a brand new car plus a cash sum of $30,000.
This was confirmed on Friday, August 20, 2021, when the Ghana Olympic Team called on him at the Jubilee House following the team’s return from Tokyo.
He indicated that, “out of the 52 countries in the Olympic Games, Ghana placed 10th on the African standings and for the first time ever in the history of the Olympic Games, a Ghanaian athlete, Samuel Takyi, was selected to represent Africa at the closing ceremony of the Olympics.”
Portraying a country that honours its heroes, the President noted that as a “show of modesty and our gratitude, and on the basis of your individual performances, I’m happy to announce that each member of the team will receive a reward of 5,000 Dollars.”
“The medalist Samuel Takyi will receive a car, 10,000 Dollars plus an additional 20,000 Dollars put in a Career Development Fund. Aside these, the total in bonuses for the team amounting to a total of 150,000 Dollars,” he concluded.
Samuel Takyi, 20, ended Ghana’s 29 years wait for an Olympic medal after winning the bronze medal at the Tokyo Games.
To reward Samuel Takyi for ending that long wait for a medal, President Akufo-Addo has set aside a sum of $20,000 for the boxer to be utilized for the development of his career.
In addition, he is receiving $10,000 as his share of an amount rewarded to the Olympic Team. Also, the young boxer will receive a car from the government.
Meanwhile, each member of Ghana’s Olympic Team is set to receive a financial reward of $5000 from the government.
