The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Akwatia constituency of the Eastern Region has announced its victory in both the parliamentary and presidential elections, following an unusual turn of events.
The district Electoral Commission (EC) officer reportedly fled the collation room, citing fears for her safety.
At a press conference held at the NPP’s constituency office, party chairman Nana Yaw Addo stated that results collated from polling stations conclusively show the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Mr. Ernest Yaw Kumi, as the winner. According to him, their presidential candidate also secured a decisive lead in the constituency.
Nana Yaw Addo explained that the EC official’s decision to abandon the collation process stemmed from concerns about potential violence from opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters, who had gathered near the collation center.
The officer reportedly left the premises under the protection of armed military personnel.
He urged NPP supporters to remain calm and patient as the party works to ensure Mr. Ernest Yaw Kumi is officially declared the Member of Parliament-elect for Akwatia.
“We’ve been peaceful since the voting ended last Saturday, and we will continue to be as we seek a resolution,” he assured.
At the press conference, some party members also expressed their concerns, calling on NPP leaders to address the situation decisively. They demanded that the NDC accept defeat and allow the EC officer to complete her work peacefully.
The situation in Akwatia highlights ongoing tensions in the aftermath of the elections, with supporters of both major political parties closely monitoring the process.
