The Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has urged Editors, Publishers, and owners of media houses to appreciate and welcome the efforts of the Legislative arm of Government to partner them for development in the country.
The Rt. Hon. Speaker is of the view that, the efforts to bring on board Editors and owners of media houses to understand that, the role of the media to investigate, report, and speak for the people as the Fourth Estate of the Realm is almost like Parliament’s function of representing the people.
The Speaker noted that, “however, efforts to see the Media Houses as partners in developing the country are rather seen as weakening the media’s capabilities of criticizing Parliament.”
Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin made these comments when the Western Regional Executives of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) led by the Western region GJA President, Mr. Desmond Cudjoe, paid a courtesy call on him and also to thank him for his support to the Association over the years.
He added that, once the support from any institution is not seen as compromising the work of the media but rather enhancing their work, it would promote development in the country.
Alban Bagbin since elected Speaker of Parliament has called on the media to partner the legislative arm of government strengthen the country’s democracy to improve the lives of individuals.
