The National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced its leadership team for the 9th Parliament, signalling the party’s readiness to take on its new role as the minority in Ghana’s legislative assembly.
The leadership team, approved by the council, includes:
- Alexander Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader,
- Patricia Apiagyei as Deputy Minority Leader,
- Frank Annoh-Dompreh as Chief Whip, and
- Habib Iddrisu as First Deputy Minority Whip.
The NPP leadership will soon meet with Members of Parliament-elect to outline their roles and prepare for the official opening of the 9th Parliament.
The announcement comes on the heels of the NPP’s significant losses in the 2024 general elections. The party won only 81 seats, down from 137 in the 8th Parliament, ceding its majority to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which now holds over 180 seats. This marks a dramatic shift in parliamentary dynamics, with the NPP transitioning from a ruling party to an opposition role.
The newly constituted leadership faces the task of steering the party through its minority position, a challenge requiring cohesive strategy and effective opposition tactics. With Alexander Afenyo-Markin at the helm, the team is expected to focus on influencing legislative priorities, holding the majority accountable, and re-establishing public trust ahead of future electoral contests.
The NPP’s leadership has emphasized its commitment to unity and effective parliamentary management, positioning itself as a constructive and vigilant opposition in the new political landscape. As the 9th Parliament convenes, all eyes will be on the party’s ability to adapt and remain a strong force in Ghanaian politics.
