The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has announced a new directive requiring all machinery used in mining operations across the country to be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) by 1st August 2025.
The move, he explained, is part of broader government reforms aimed at sanitising the mining sector and improving oversight over heavy-duty equipment used in both legal and illegal mining activities.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of the Interior on July 15,2025, the Minister made it clear that machinery that remains unregistered after the stipulated deadline will be confiscated by the State.
“This directive is in line with the Government’s ongoing efforts to reform the mining sector and strengthen internal security. All machinery used for mining must be registered with the DVLA on or before 1st August 2025,” the Interior Minister stated.
He added that enforcement will begin immediately after the deadline. “The Ghana Police Service and the DVLA have been tasked to commence strict enforcement of this directive from 2nd August 2025,” he stressed.
The directive is expected to affect a wide range of mining machinery including excavators, bulldozers, and other heavy-duty equipment commonly used in both small-scale and large-scale mining operations.
Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak urged the general public, particularly individuals and companies involved in mining activities, to comply with the directive in order to avoid sanctions.
He further reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to promoting law and order, noting that unregulated and illegal use of mining equipment continues to pose a significant threat to national security and the environment.
“The Ministry of the Interior remains focused on safeguarding internal security and ensuring responsible use of resources in line with the law,” the statement concluded.
