The Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Major (Rtd) Dr. Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, has confirmed that all individuals trapped under the collapsed structure near Newtown Experimental D/A School have been successfully rescued.
The collapse occurred on Sunday, March 29, while worshippers were gathered at the site, resulting in three fatalities and approximately 20 injuries, raising renewed concerns over building safety standards in Accra.
Dr. Kuyon stated that search and rescue operations have officially ended, with no one left under the debris. Authorities have now shifted focus to safely clearing the site.
“We have moved from emergency response, which aimed to save lives and property, to the next phase: clearing the debris to allow community activities to resume. This stage is critical, and everyone must avoid actions that could endanger others,” he said.
He noted that sniffer dogs were used during the rescue operations to ensure no individuals remained trapped.
Dr. Kuyon also praised the prompt and coordinated efforts of the various emergency teams involved.
