The Ministry of National Security has urged the public to disregard any reports that the suspect arrested in connection with the shooting that killed the soldier in Kasoa Millenium City is a staff of national security.

In a statement dated May 1, 2024, the ministry indicated that news circulating on social media suggests that the suspect, Benlord Ababio, is not a National Security personnel.

“The Ministry wishes to put on record that the suspect, Benlord Ababio, who’s currently in police custody, is not a staff of the Ministry of National Security. The public is therefore urged to disregard any news item that portrays the suspect as a staff of the Ministry of National Security,” the statement said.

The preliminary police investigation has established that the suspect, Benlord Ababio allegedly shot the soldier at Kasoa Millenium City on Tuesday, 30 April 2024, at about 4:20 pm and is currently under custody to aid in the investigation.

In furtherance to this matter, the Ghana Armed Forces has begun a probe into the incident as they assure the public outcome of the investigations will be announced in due course.

Background Story

A land dispute in Kasoa Millennium City escalated into a deadly confrontation, taking the life of a valiant military officer in his prime.

Amidst the unfolding drama, a sub-chief unleashed gunfire upon two officers outside the district police station, narrowly sparing their lives but leaving a haunting aftermath.

The genesis of this tragic saga lies in a protracted legal skirmish over property rights, with reports indicating that a parcel of land was procured by the deceased officer’s brother on their behalf.

However, their aspirations for cultivation were persistently thwarted by a gang purportedly led by a land guard, plunging them into a vortex of conflict and uncertainty.

Venturing to the contested terrain in hopes of mediating the dispute, the officer and his companions were met with the jarring reality of ongoing construction by another party, fueling tensions despite their earnest efforts to defuse the situation and seek police intervention.

In a grievous turn of events, the officers’ quest for justice took a deadly turn as they sought recourse from higher authorities, only to be met with resistance from the sub-chief, culminating in a fateful exchange of gunfire that claimed one life and left others teetering on the brink of tragedy.

Amidst the chaos, Kofi Asmah, proprietor of the 21st Century Construction Company embroiled in the dispute, has levelled damning accusations of corruption against the local police, underscoring the urgent need for a reckoning in the pursuit of justice and peace.
