Parliament has urged the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to reconsider the decision to allow first year Senior High School students (SHS) to report on Monday, December 4, 2023.
Speaker of Parliament, Alban S. K. Bagbin, after listening to members of the House on the need to extend the reporting date due to challenges parents, teachers and students might face, proposed that the reopening date be shifted to the first week of January to allow parents and teachers prepare adequately.
The move follows a statement by the Ranking Member on Education and MP for Akatsi North, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe on the rush to allow first year students go to school on Monday.
With only the Majority leader and his deputy representing the majority side of the House, MPs from the minority side supported the statement and mentioned that, it was inappropriate for school placement to be released just two days ago and students have to report on Monday, December 4.
The Speaker then directed that the Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, appear before the House on Monday, December 4 to brief the House on the reopening date and other matters but to as a matter of urgency reconsider the reporting date.
