A recent nationwide poll conducted by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) reveals that a majority of Ghanaians support the election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
The survey indicates that these individuals prefer a non-partisan approach to these elections.
According to the IEA, the survey, conducted between August 15 and 26, 2025, across all 16 regions of Ghana, showed that 67.9% of respondents expressed a preference for MMDCEs to be elected rather than appointed. Out of this figure, 63.5% preferred non-partisan elections.
The survey further indicated that a substantial number of Ghanaians — 69.6% — are aware of how MMDCEs currently assume office, a process dominated by presidential appointments.
However, 30.4% admitted to not knowing the current selection process, highlighting the need for improved civic education.
