The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has issued summons to 12 persons in Accra for flouting the Sanitation and Cleaning Bye-laws of the Assembly.
The 12 who are expected to appear in court on June 4 2021 were summoned after they failed to abate nuisances following notices served on them after the recent clean-up exercise held in Ga Mashie.
Their offences include the absence of toilet facilities on their premises, preparing food on the street, detrimental accumulation of articles on the premises, dilapidated bathhouse, insanitary bathhouse as well as keeping and harbouring animals on-premises.
The summons was issued on Monday, May 31 2021 by Public Health officials of the AMA.
Speaking in an interview Head of Public Affairs of the AMA, Gilbert Nii Ankrah said the Assembly had intensified its enforcement exercise as part of efforts to keep the city clean hence the summons.
“The offenders failed to abate nuisances following notices served on them after the recent clean-up exercise held in Ga Mashie… Our officers have been on them but efforts to get them to comply proved futile,” he said.
He reiterated the need for citizens to take a keen interest in sanitation issues since ensuring a clean environment was a shared responsibility.
“A clean environment keep us healthy and safe from diseases including Cholera, and other communicable diseases. Ensuring that our communities are clean should not be left only to the Assembly… We must all play a part since we contribute to the generation of waste,” he said
He cautioned that stiffer punishment would be meted out to sanitation offenders and urged all to be responsible for keeping the city clean.
