A task force of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has pulled down two large makeshift sheds used as an auto-mechanic workshop erected behind the Awudome Cemetery near the SSNIT Pension House, despite warnings against encroachment boldly painted on a wall at the site.
The action, carried out on Monday morning, formed part of an enforcement operation following a series of directives issued by the Assembly led by the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, ordering occupants to vacate the government-reserved land.
The operation also resulted in the confiscation of a weighing scale belonging to scrap dealers who had turned a parcel of land in front of a Catholic Church around the Awudome Roundabout into a scrap collection point
In addition, the task force halted renovation works on a shop after the persons undertaking the works failed to produce the required permits when requested by the team.
Speaking after the exercise, the Coordinating Director of the AMA, Mr Douglas N.K Annoful, explained that the Assembly was acting to protect public lands and enforce city regulations, following repeated warnings to occupants and operators who had disregarded official directives.
