The maiden Regional Sanitation Day Clean-up Exercise in the Accra Metropolis is scheduled for February 28, 2025.
This exercise, which aligns with His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda, will commence at 6:00 AM and end at 10:00 AM.
Speaking after a preparatory meeting held at the City Hall ahead of the exercise, the Director of Waste Management at the AMA, Ing. Solomon Noi, disclosed that the maiden edition would focus on the stretch from Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park to the Fire Service Training School (John Evans Atta Mills High Street) in preparation for the upcoming March 6 Independence Day celebration.
He noted that the exercise would include various activities, including collecting sand along roadside curbs, sweeping streets and public spaces, weeding overgrown areas, and collecting general waste within the Central Business District.
“The exercise will take place once every month, on the last Friday. Since it’s a working day, we have to manage our normal workload alongside the clean-up. Therefore, we have decided to focus on one sub-metro at a time each month,” he stated.
He noted that as part of scheduled plans Ashiedu Keteke Sub-Metro would be covered in February, Ablekuma South Sub-Metro in March, and Okaikoi South Sub-Metro in April. He assured that the rotation would continue to ensure every sub-metro benefited from the initiative adding that plans were underway to acquire more logistics to conduct clean-up exercises across all three sub-metros simultaneously
He also revealed that the AMA would partner with Solid Waste Ghana, a Non-Governmental Organisation, to embark on a clean-up exercise at Agbogbloshie.
“Currently, we have limited equipment, but with time, if we acquire more trucks and logistics, we may expand the programme to cover all sub-metros at the same time,” he said, adding that, for now, the AMA would manage one sub-metro at a time to ensure sustainability.
Ing. Noi urged residents to take advantage of the initiative to engage with their Assembly Members for assistance before, during, and after the exercise to facilitate smooth operations.
The Coordinating Director of the AMA, Douglas N.K. Annoful assured that all refuse accumulated after the exercise would be collected the same day.
He disclosed that a dedicated task force would be assigned to monitor and manage waste disposal, to ensure that waste generated within the AMA’s jurisdiction was properly evacuated.
Present at the meeting were the Presiding Member of AMA and President of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), Hon. Alfred Asiedu Adjei, the Director of Administration at AMA, Mr. Samuel Amponsah and others.
