Members of the Nsakina 10 Boys and Freedom Fighters under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Amasaman in the Ga West Municipality in Greater Accra, have called on the party hierarchy to immediately resolve the ongoing impasse in the constituency to allow them to organize the constituency elections.
Speaking at a press conference at the party constituency office at Amasaman, the spokesperson of the group, Mr William Afrakoh said for the past nine months no party activity has taken place, making the party dormant in the constituency.
Mr Afrakoh said this has come because of a court injunction placed on the constituency by the suspended Chairman, Mr Winfred Kofi Zoryiku against the organization of the constituency elections.
He said due to this impasse, the constituency was left out of the recently organized regional elections and there are no constituency executives to steer the affairs of the party.
“This has disenfranchised us from expressing our constitutional mandate governing the electing of regional executives,” Mr Afrakoh stated.
Speaking on the constitution of the NDC, he said Article 54 (1) states that members are supposed to elect new executives at a constituency conference organize every four years. This implies that the tenure of office is and remains four so what it means is that the constituency has no executives.
The spokesperson said all these current developments will not serve the party any good if the regional executive and national do not help to solve the issue in Amasaman then the party cannot have a united front to battle the New Patriotic Party in the 2024 general elections.
“As members of the Akatamanso family, we cannot sit on the fence and watch the party’s fortunes dwindle in the constituency. We are therefore counting on the leadership at the regional level to act fast to enable us to exercise our franchise in the upcoming national elections,” he stated.
Mr Afrakoh said Amasaman Constituency is the third largest constituency in the country and is very crucial for the NDC’S quest to win the 2024 elections.
The Amasaman NDC reveals that Article 15(4) states that in a situation where a constituency conference cannot be organized within four years as required, the National Executives Committee upon recommendations of the Regional Executive Committee shall direct the holding of the conference at a subsequent date.
“But in a time where national executives are busy running their campaigns, it is in this respect that we beseech our regional executives to as a matter of urgency address the issues immediately.”
The group used the occasion to congratulate the newly elected regional executives for the party and called for their support to resolve the impasses in the constituency going into the 2024 elections.
In a telephone interview with Mr Zoryiku, the suspended chairman said he is waiting for the party hierarchy to summon the two parties for redress before the injunction case can be removed for party activities to commence.
He said the decision to place an injunction on the party was a result of the wrong suspension which needed the regional executive committee’s attention and once that issue is resolved the party can go on with its activities.
