Blay Nyameke Armah of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has defeated Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) and Minister of Arts, Tourism, and Culture, to claim the Sekondi constituency seat.
Blay Nyameke Armah secured a decisive victory with 14,558 votes, representing 56.40% of the total valid votes cast, while Egyapa Mercer, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 11,084 votes, equivalent to 42.94%. A total of 25,813 votes were cast in the constituency, with 171 ballots rejected.
This marks a dramatic reversal of fortunes for Egyapa Mercer, who had previously dominated the Sekondi seat. In the 2016 parliamentary election, he won convincingly with 16,839 votes, or 59.47% of the valid votes, defeating Emmanuel Assifuah of the NDC and candidates from the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and Convention People’s Party (CPP).
Blay Nyameke Armah’s victory is being interpreted as a strong showing for the NDC and reflects a broader trend of closely fought parliamentary races in the 2024 elections.
