The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram and lead proponent of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, Samuel Nartey George, has disclosed that the anti-gay bill is likely to be passed by March 2024.
Speaking on the way forward of the passage of the bill on Eyewitness News on Citi FM with Umaru Sanda Amadu, he stated that, the bill is currently undergoing amendment by various stakeholders.
“They are almost 60% done with consideration. Hopefully, there will be another two weeks of parliamentary work when we resume, and they should be done with consideration. The third stage of reading is just a procedural thing. It is read, and then the bill is passed”, he said.
The Ningo-Prampram legislator emphasized that by the end of the first meeting, the passage of the bill should be an Easter gift to Ghanaians.
“In fact, during the first session of the meeting, we are about to start, we believe that in the first session which is going to run from the 6th of February to the end of March or early April, I believe that we should pass the bill before Easter. I think it is something we should give as an Easter gift from Parliament to the nation. So we would strive to work with the speaker and the committee chair,” he added.
The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values, 2021 Bill, nicknamed Anti-Gay Bill, and now with the Constitutional, Parliamentary and Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament, is a Private Members’ Bill championed by eight legislators, seeking to outlaw the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) and adjacent activities, and stipulating jail terms for offenders, sympathisers and funders.
The bill, introduced to the House in July 2021, underwent its first reading on 3rd August 2021 and has since been transmitted to Parliament’s Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee with subsequent readings with the resumption of the House from recess.
