Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has warned that any government official caught engaging in illegal mining will face arrest, stressing the Mahama administration’s commitment to tackling the growing environmental crisis.
His statement comes after Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh urged the Lands and Natural Resources Minister to brief Parliament weekly on the worsening destruction of forests and water bodies.
Ayariga told Parliament that President Mahama will not protect any appointee or party member involved in galamsey, a move he says contrasts sharply with the previous Akufo-Addo administration.
“Anyone found aiding or abetting illegal mining will be arrested, no matter their rank,” he said, adding that under the former government, reports about party officials involved in galamsey were ignored.
