The protest by members of the Arise Ghana, against what the group described as “persistent and astronomical hikes in fuel prices.” has turned violent.
According to report, the police arrested two (2) protestors for allegedly blocking the road and throwing stones at the security officers at Obra Sport, Accra.
Myrepubliconline’s reporter at the scene, Philip Anto reports that the police, who had already engaged organisers of the march to discuss issues, regarding routes and duration had to move swiftly to try to clear demonstrators who attempted to block entry points to the city. Angered by marching orders from the police, the demonstrators defied the orders and in response pelted stones at security personnel.
The Police personnel fired tear gas at the agitated protestors during the demonstration when they were pelting stones at the police.
The demonstration dubbed #KromAyeShe, inspired by the pressure group, Arise Ghana has so far attracted hundreds of demonstrators from across the country who had made their way to the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.
The protest comes after an Accra High Court ruled that the demonstration should take place between 8am and 4pm on the route proposed by the Ghana Police, instead of running the demonstration into nightfall.
The ruling by the Court followed an application by the Police which said the initial plan by organisers of the demonstration to picket the seat of government till about 10pm on Tuesday, did not augur well for the safety of the demonstrators and the rest of the public.
