The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced an operational shift from peacekeeping to peace enforcement in the troubled Bawku area and adjoining communities, as violence in the region escalates into a major national security concern.

The military’s intensified posture, which takes immediate effect, is in line with a directive from President and Commander-in-Chief John Dramani Mahama. It follows what the GAF describes as a deteriorating security situation marked by recurring clashes, reprisal attacks, and mounting civilian casualties.

A statement issued on Tuesday, July 29, by the GAF cited the activities of armed elements whose repeated attacks have not only endangered lives but also posed a broader threat to Ghana’s peace and stability.

“This transition to peace enforcement has become necessary due to activities of armed elements that have intermittently resulted in violence, reprisal attacks and innocent deaths, highlighting a dangerous pattern that threatens not only Bawku but also the peace and security of our dear nation,” the statement read.

As part of the peace enforcement strategy, the military has been granted authority to use all necessary force to restore and maintain law and order. The existing curfew in the area has also been reinforced and will now run strictly from 2 p.m. to 6 a.m., with full compliance expected from residents.

Citizens have been advised to avoid interfering with military operations or obstructing personnel in any form, with the GAF warning that any such actions will provoke an immediate and robust response.

The Armed Forces reaffirmed their constitutional duty to protect Ghana’s territorial integrity and reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all civilians as the new operational framework is rolled out.
