The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has revealed that it has successfully concluded a high-stakes search and rescue operation on Thursday, February 26, 2026, saving 71 Ghanaian fishermen who were left stranded after a violent piracy attack at sea.

The incident occurred approximately 35 nautical miles off the coast of Gomoa Nyanyano and Senya Bereku in the Central Region.

According to a statement issued by the GAF Department of Public Relations, the fishermen were attacked at dawn by robbers who seized their outboard motors and personal belongings, leaving their vessels immobilised.

The affected boats identified by authorities included the Argentina 2, Argentina 3, Sea Lion, and Berema Nsukwa.

The statement indicates that the rescue mission was a collaborative effort involving the Ghana Navy, the Ghana Air Force, and local fishermen from the Nyanyano and Senya Bereku areas.

GAF said specialised units were essential to the evacuation, as the Navy’s Special Boat Squadron deployed fast interceptors to reach the distressed vessels while ships from the Eastern and Western Naval Commands provided critical operational support.

These coordinated efforts resulted in the safe rescue of 71 fishermen, with 24 victims transported to Tema and 47 others brought to Senya Bereku.

Following debriefs with the survivors, the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that no kidnappings took place during the assault.

Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, the acting director general of public relations, noted that the Navy has maintained a presence in the area and is continuing patrols within Ghana’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

The GAF expressed gratitude to the local fishing community and Gizella Tetteh Agbotui, the member of parliament for the area, for their timely assistance during the crisis.
