The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah has noted that the Army Sports Teams have won a total 167 medals in national, regional and international competitions over the past 3 years been involved in 19 sporting activities.
Major General Oppong- Peprah further explained that the Army HQ has remained the primary sponsor of the teams and some of the sponsorships included the donation of the 33-Seater bus, to facilitate the Teams’ movements and the provision of funds, to support training and matches.
Describing it as one of the challenges facing the Army sports teams and interventions made they had been able to choke some successes the Army Sports Teams within 3 years, has won a total 167 medals in national, regional and international competitions comprising of 86 Gold, 51 Silver and 30 Bronze.
Significantly, 26 of these 167 medals are international medals comprising 16 Gold, 9 Silver and a Bronze.
Addressing hundreds of uniformed sportsmen and women who had paraded at Nicholson Sports Stadium, Burma Camp Accra to commemorate the achievements of the Army Sports Team over the period of 2021 – 2023.
Major General Oppong-Peprah noted that these achievements by the Army Sports Team was evidence to debunk public perception of the Ghana Armed only good at giving slaps and brutality as perceived by the public but they are good sportsmen and women who have greatly supported the Ghana Sports fraternity and the Country as whole both locally and internationally.
Some of the achievements included, the Army Ladies Volleyball Team Captain, 206795 Cpl Katadat Rashaka was adjudged the Best Volleyball Player by SWAG for 2022.
Similarly, Pot Rect Seidu Fatima of the Army Handball Women Team won the Best Player and Best Scorer with 57 Goals at the International Handball Federation Tournament held in Ghana in April 2023.
Also, the Army Volleyball Coach, 196897 S/Sgt Ntaaga George has been appointed the Assistant National Volleyball Coach.
Additionally, 190955 CPOI Taylor Patrick, the Hockey Team Coach has been appointed the Head Coach of the National Women Hockey Team and he is currently in South Africa with 11 Army Hockey Players. They are representing Ghana in the 2024 Olympic Qualifying Competition currently underway in South Africa.
Major General Oppong-Peprah noted that, the Army has just released 207995 Cpl Katadat Rashaka and 215256 Pte Ankomah Emmanuel to Paolo Volleyball Club in Malta and South Burnie Hockey Club in Australia respectively.
“It is gratifying that the Army Sports Team have won alot of medals; it is the right attitude, commitments, team work that has resulted in your winning. I am convinced that this is just the beginning of this great vision”, he said.
Major General Oppong-Peprah acknowledge the immerse support the Sport teams had received stating that, last year, the CEO of Award Centre, Mr Paa Kwesi Amoah supported the Army Teams with balls, bags and jerseys.
Latex Foam Ghana also supported the Army Sports Teams with some cash donation.
Again, when we needed USD 20,000.00 for the Army Ladies Hockey Team to compete, in the African Cup for Club Championship (ACCC) in Kenya in February this year, Mr Adolf Tetteh Adjei CEO of SAPHOLDA Coy Ltd lend a helping hand and it proved worthy as the team won Silver in that competition.
Trophies were presented to deserving sports men and women in the various sports disciplines which included the 2023 Women Premier League Supper Cup Champions and the 2023 Hockey League Champions among others.
