Asante Akyem North’s current Member of Parliament, OK Frimpong, has reiterated his commitment to prioritizing the development of his constituency, despite facing backlash over his decision to align with the Majority Caucus in Parliament.
Hon. Frimpong, who ran as an independent candidate during the last election, explained that his decision aligns with his campaign pledge to work with any ruling government to secure the necessary resources for his constituency.
The current administration, led by President John Dramani Mahama, represents the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Critics have raised concerns about Hon. Frimpong’s collaboration with the Majority, particularly given perceptions that he was supported by members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during his campaign.
However, the MP has clarified that his allegiance lies solely with the people of Asante Akyem North and their development needs, not with any political party.
“During my campaign, I made it clear that, as an independent candidate, I would work with whichever government holds power. This is the only way I can effectively lobby for contracts and development projects for my constituency,” Hon. Frimpong stated.
This approach echoes the challenges faced by a previous MP for the constituency, Hon. Kwadwo Baah Agyemang, who served from 2013 to 2017 under the administration of then-President Mahama. Critics argued that Hon. Agyemang’s inability to meet constituents’ expectations was due, in part, to his opposition status as an NPP MP during an NDC presidency.
Hon. Frimpong’s decision underscores the delicate balance independent MPs must strike in navigating Ghana’s polarized political landscape.
In his statement, he urged constituents to remember that President Mahama leads the nation and called for unity in supporting development initiatives, regardless of political affiliations.
The MP concluded with an appeal to his constituents: “Whether you voted for or against the president, let us come together to bring progress to our community.”
