The Minister for Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye together with Chiefs and Community Leaders of Alogboshie, held a sod cutting ceremony to commence community upgrading interventions at Alogboshie, a suburb of Accra, as part of the Greater Accra Resilient Integrated Development (GARID) project.
Under the current phase of the project, the Ministry through the GARID Project will construct primary and secondary drains, access roads, solid waste management facilities, and extend security lights, and water supply networks in the community.
The project as indicated by the minister forms part of the government’s efforts to tackle and drastically mitigate the perennial flooding challenges in communities which have been identified as flood-prone areas.
Speaking at the brief ceremony in Accra, Asenso-Boakye disclosed that similar works will also commence in Akweteyman and Nima in fulfillment of government’s commitment to enhance access to basic social infrastructure.
On the part of resettling project-affected residents, the sector minister also noted strides are being made to resettle individuals being affected by the proposed reconstruction of the Kaneshie storm drains which the minister said will commence in January.
The GARID project coordinator, Dr. Ohene Sarfoh therefore appealed to Ghanaians to support governments effort to control flood.
He stressed that, individuals need to change the habit of disposing off solid wastes into drains, choice of building locations and other climate-resilient flood mitigation measures.
