Ashanti Police dismantle notorious drug cartel in Apagya-Kodie

Apagya-Kodie in the Ashanti Region has been thrown into the spotlight after a dramatic late-night raid by a special police task force uncovered what sources describe as a major illegal drug operation allegedly linked to a notorious local figure known only as “Nana 1.”

The operation, carried out by the Tafo-Pankrono Divisional Task Force, reportedly took place between 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, following intelligence gathered about a suspected drug distribution network operating from a private residence in the area.

Late-Night Police Operation

According to sources familiar with the operation, the task force stormed the residence of the suspected drug kingpin at Apagya-Kodie, where they allegedly found a group of 11 individuals actively packaging suspected Indian hemp, commonly referred to as weed.

Among those arrested was one female suspect, who was reportedly assisting in the packaging process.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the suspects were caught red-handed, working in what investigators believe was a large-scale distribution setup.

In a stunning discovery, officers were shocked to see how large quantities of the suspected narcotics were packed in two vehicles belonging to the suspected ringleader.

The vehicles reportedly included:

• Benz saloon

• SUV Pajero

Sources say both vehicles were filled to capacity with parcels of suspected weed, raising suspicions that the operation had been distributing drugs on a significant scale across the region.

Weapon Recovered

During the raid, officers also reportedly retrieved one SB pump action shot gun believed to have been in the possession of the suspects.

The discovery of the firearm has heightened concerns that the alleged drug operation may have been prepared to defend its activities.

Evidence Moved to Police Headquarters

Sources at the Moro Market Police Headquarters confirmed that the seized items and arrested suspects were transported to the station immediately after the raid.

The case reportedly escalated further when all exhibits were transferred to the Ashanti Regional Police Headquarters on Friday for further investigation.

Additionally, the suspects themselves were later transferred to the regional headquarters as authorities continued their probe into the alleged criminal network.

Silence from Police Raises Eyebrows

Despite the scale of the alleged operation, what is raising the most questions is the complete silence from authorities.

A review of official communication channels of the Ghana Police Service including its social media platforms shows no public statement or update regarding the arrests or the seizure of the suspected narcotics.

This is unusual, as the police service typically publicizes major drug busts and criminal arrests to keep the public informed.

Growing Suspicions of Possible Cover-Up

The lack of official communication has fueled speculation within the community.

Some residents and observers are questioning whether the silence could indicate internal complications within the investigation.

There are also unverified allegations circulating suggesting that the suspected drug kingpin may have connections with certain law enforcement officers, claims that, if proven true, could explain the reluctance to publicly disclose details about the raid.

Drug-Infused Beverage Also Allegedly Found

Sources also told Kumasimail that officers discovered parcels of weed along with bottles of a mixed fruit beverage allegedly infused with cannabis, locally referred to as “fammu3.”

The substances were reportedly found inside the suspects’ vehicles, according to sources, ready for distribution. The taskforce also packed some in the vehicles.

Public Demands Answers

As days pass without an official explanation, pressure is mounting for authorities to clarify what exactly happened during the raid and what steps are being taken in the investigation.

Residents and civil society observers argue that an operation of this magnitude cannot simply disappear from public scrutiny.
