Local Government Minister, Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced a sharp increase in disbursements from the District Assemblies Common Fund to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), rising from GHS 362 million in 2024 to GHS 5 billion in 2025.

The minister described the increase as unprecedented, noting that the funds were released in a timely manner to support local development initiatives across the country.

A quarterly breakdown of the 2025 disbursements shows GHS 790.4 million allocated in the first quarter, GHS 1.46 billion in the second quarter, GHS 1.19 billion in the third quarter, and GHS 1.59 billion in the fourth quarter.

According to Mr. Ibrahim, each MMDA was required to undertake key infrastructure projects, including the construction of at least two Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, three classroom blocks, and 10 boreholes, alongside the completion of ongoing legacy projects.

He added that 25 percent of the Common Fund was dedicated to the development of 24-hour economy model markets nationwide.

The minister said the increased funding has already translated into visible progress, with 494 CHPS compounds, 761 classroom blocks, 4,029 boreholes, and 2,755 legacy projects currently at various stages of completion.

In addition, contracts have been awarded for 261 24-hour economy model markets, with construction underway at several sites.

Mr. Ibrahim emphasized that the scale and timeliness of the disbursements reflect the government’s commitment to strengthening local governance and improving access to essential services across communities.
