The Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman, Hon. Thomas Ampem Nyarko, has been nominated as the Deputy Minister for Finance, a move widely seen as recognition of his outstanding contributions to Ghana’s financial and political landscape.
A stalwart of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Ampem Nyarko has been instrumental in strengthening the party’s presence in Asuogyaman, transforming what was once a swing constituency into a stronghold for three consecutive elections. His nomination is viewed as a reward for his dedication, leadership, and expertise in finance and economic governance.
Before his appointment, Hon. Ampem Nyarko played a crucial role in Parliament, serving as the Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Budget. In this position, he was responsible for scrutinizing and shaping Ghana’s fiscal policies, ensuring responsible financial management and efficient budget implementation. He was also an active member of key parliamentary committees, contributing to discussions on economic governance, agriculture, and development planning.
His political influence extends beyond Parliament. Since becoming MP, Hon. Ampem Nyarko has spearheaded various development initiatives, particularly in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and job creation.
His grassroots engagement strategy has not only increased the NDC’s support in the constituency but also fostered unity within the party, eliminating factionalism and strengthening the party’s local base.
Many constituents have expressed excitement over his nomination, seeing it as a victory for Asuogyaman.
“Yes, yes, we knew our MP would get an appointment in the government because he has worked hard and is always with us. We remember him for many reasons, including his support during COVID-19 and the dam spillage. He showed love,” said Adzo, a trader at Atimpoku.
His appointment has also sparked optimism regarding infrastructural development in the area. A resident of Anum, identified as Azaaman, shared his expectations: “Our road from Asikuma to Anum and Boso will be tarred now that our brother Tommy has been given this appointment. We are happy for our MP.”
As he steps into his new role at the Finance Ministry, Hon. Ampem Nyarko is expected to leverage his financial expertise and grassroots experience to contribute to national economic policies. His colleagues and supporters believe his leadership will not only benefit Asuogyaman but also help drive Ghana’s economic growth.
Rubbaman Agyei, a childhood friend of the MP, attested to his commitment: “He is an outstanding personality who has never failed in any task he has been given. From JHS to the training college and as DCE, he has been a leader with a difference. Let us wait and see more progress.”
Hon. Ampem Nyarko’s elevation to the Finance Ministry marks a new chapter in his political career, reinforcing his reputation as a dedicated and capable leader. As he takes on this national assignment, many believe his influence will continue to grow, both within his constituency and across the country.
