Residents of six communities in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region took to the streets of Akosombo on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, to protest against the Volta River Authority (VRA) over what they describe as exorbitant and accumulated electricity bills.
The aggrieved power consumers from Combine, Tusker, Mangoase Afabeng, Osukwao, and Mataheko allege that the VRA is demanding payments of outstanding bills ranging from thousands to over ten thousand cedis before reconnecting power to affected households and businesses.
According to the demonstrators, many residents have been left without electricity due to their inability to meet the payment demands, crippling their daily lives and economic activities. They are calling on the VRA to introduce a flexible payment plan to ease the financial burden on affected consumers.
The dispute between the VRA and residents over electricity tariffs has persisted for the past eight years, following the replacement of analogue meters with Credit 300 meters. Consumers claim the new meters have led to abnormally high charges, resulting in widespread defaults and the accumulation of significant arrears.
The protesters have warned that if their concerns are not addressed, they will escalate their actions into a full-scale demonstration in the coming days to press home their demands.
