Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Minority Leader in Parliament, has raised concerns about the integrity of Ghana’s voter register, citing irregularities that could undermine the credibility of the 2024 general elections.
Dr. Forson has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to perform a thorough audit of the voter register to address these issues and ensure a free, fair, and transparent electoral process.
“We believe that an audit of the voter register is essential. The tampering we have observed makes it crucial to conduct a proper review. This audit will help us understand the extent of the problem and rectify the system,” Dr. Forson said during a nationwide demonstration organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Accra.
In his constituency, Dr. Forson disclosed alarming discrepancies, including around 3,000 names added to the transfer register and multiple registrations, inflating the register by approximately 5,000 names.
“This raises serious concerns, and we need Parliament to intervene,” Dr. Forson stressed.
The NDC leadership is committed to advocating for reforms within the EC to address these discrepancies before the elections.
Dr. Forson warned that failing to audit the register could cast significant doubt on the legitimacy of the upcoming elections and erode public trust in the EC’s ability to manage a transparent electoral process.
The NDC has warned that if these issues are not resolved, the credibility of the 2024 elections could be compromised.
Dr. Forson has threatened to recall Parliament to compel the EC to conduct the necessary audit.
