The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has urged the Police Service to swiftly complete investigations into the recent Democracy Hub protest in Accra, which resulted in the arrest of several demonstrators due to acts of lawlessness.

He urged the police to conclude their investigations by the next adjourned court dates.

According to him, the move aims to identify and exclude individuals against whom insufficient evidence is found to proceed further.

He made this call when addressing judges and magistrates during their Annual General Meeting of the Association in Accra on Wednesday, October 2 noting that regardless of the legitimacy of concerns of the protesters, it must not infringe on the rights of movement of others, security of police officers among others.

Dame emphasized the importance of balancing legitimate concerns with public safety and rights, highlighting the need to protect citizens’ rights while maintaining law and order.

His statement comes after 54 protesters, including prominent Democracy Hub members Oliver Barker Vormawor, Raphel Felicity Nelson, and Ama Governor, were arrested and charged with various offenses.

The protesters, who demonstrated against illegal mining from September 21-23, were denied bail and are scheduled to reappear in court on October 8 and 10, 2024. Dame also advised the prosecution to consider bail applications for the demonstrators at the next adjourned dates.
