The Food and Drug Authority (FDA) is sounding a cautionary note, advising the public to avoid consuming meat from sick animals during the festive season.
Director of Food Industrial Support Services at the FDA, Mr. Ebenezer Kofi Essel, emphasised the potential negative impact on health associated with the consumption of such meat, stating that eating meat from sick animals poses a significant risk to consumers.
He noted that Contaminated meat can harbour harmful pathogens and toxins that may lead to various health issues, ranging from food-borne illnesses to more severe conditions.
“As we celebrate the birth of Christ with family and friends, the director added that there is the need to be cautious with whatever we consume adding that individuals need to stop the practice of burning animals such as cows, goats and sheep with car tires before consumption.” He added
As part of a nationwide sensitization exercise, the FDA further advised the public to be vigilant about expired products on the market during the festive period, stressing that most of these expired items are sold under the guise of promotion and discounted prices just to attract buyers.
