Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has condemned what he described as the disturbing conduct of military personnel deployed to Bawku during operations on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
In a statement issued on Monday, July 14, Mr. Ayariga expressed outrage over the reported destruction of a culturally revered statue and alleged acts of brutality perpetrated against civilians.
He called the actions “unacceptable,” demanding an immediate and thorough investigation by the military high command.
Among the issues raised was the destruction of a statue of the Zugran of the Kusaug Traditional Area, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, which Ayariga described as a direct affront to the cultural identity and dignity of the Kusaug people. He insisted that those responsible be held to account.
The legislator also condemned reports of military aggression against residents during the operation, warning that such acts only serve to aggravate tensions and undermine efforts to restore peace in the area.
While he criticised the military’s actions, Mr. Ayariga also denounced a separate violent incident involving unidentified gunmen who attacked a vehicle being escorted by soldiers.
He urged all parties to avoid retaliatory violence and work towards de-escalating tensions.
The MP made a passionate appeal to the youth of Kusaug to exercise restraint in the face of provocation, assuring them that the government is taking urgent steps to investigate alleged infiltration within the military ranks by individuals with political motives who may be fuelling instability in Bawku.
He extended sympathy to families affected by the violence and reiterated his call for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
