More than 40,000 registered voters in Ayawaso East are heading to the polls today, Tuesday, March 3, 2026, to elect a new Member of Parliament in a closely watched by-election.

The contest follows the passing of the area’s MP, Mahama Naser Toure, in January 2026, which left the parliamentary seat vacant.

After internal primaries, the New Patriotic Party selected Baba Ali as its candidate, while the National Democratic Congress nominated former High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal, to contest the seat.

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has assured residents of a peaceful and transparent voting exercise.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, March 2, the EC’s Director of Research, Fred Tetteh, indicated that all logistical and security arrangements have been finalised to guarantee a credible process. He stressed that the parliamentary by-election will be conducted under the first-past-the-post system, cautioning that even a single vote could determine the outcome.

The Commission also warned against electoral malpractices, particularly vote-buying, noting that any proven violation would attract sanctions.

Security personnel have been deployed across polling stations within the constituency to ensure law and order throughout the voting exercise.
