Residents of New-Dormaa Mango Grove in the Sunyani Municipality were thrown into mourning on Sunday night after a tragic fire outbreak claimed the lives of a husband and wife in their five-bedroom residence.

The deceased have been identified as Nana Siribour Ampoo II, a 65-year-old sub-chief from Wenchi, and his 48-year-old wife, Grace Yaa Ampoo.

The devastating incident occurred around 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 19, during a heavy downpour that swept through parts of Sunyani.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire spread rapidly through the building, leaving the couple trapped inside despite desperate attempts to escape. Other occupants of the house, however, managed to flee unhurt.

According people living in the neighborhood, a once vibrant home of the late couple had been reduced to smouldering debris.

Speaking to the media, Assistant Divisional Officer Grade One (ADO1) Kwame Adomako of the Ghana National Fire Service confirmed that his team received a distress call late Sunday night.

“By the time firefighters arrived, the blaze had reached dangerous levels,” he said. “Preliminary investigations suggest the victims attempted to escape but were unfortunately trapped.”

He described the incident as “deeply unfortunate” and expressed concern about the increasing frequency of night-time fires in the Bono Region. ADO1 Adomako also urged the public to promptly contact the Service via the emergency line (03520-27129) in the event of a fire outbreak.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established, though investigations are ongoing.

The Police and fire officials are investigating in the matter to know the cause of the fire.
