Police officers has gunned down suspected armed robber in a shootout with at Dormaa-Gonokrom, a border community in the Dormaa Municipality of the Bono Region.
The incident occurred during an intelligence-led operation targeting robbery gangs operating in the area. The Bono Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Joshua Copposon, confirmed that five firearms were recovered during the operation.
Ambush and Return Fire
DCOP Copposon explained that on February 11, 2026, police intelligence indicated that a gang was planning to attack traders along the Dormaa-Gonokrom highway. Surveillance teams were promptly deployed to prevent the planned robbery.
In the early hours of February 12, officers advancing toward a parked motorbike came under gunfire from nearby bushes. Police returned fire, overpowering the suspects. A search of the area revealed one male suspect dead, with an AK-47 rifle beside him.
Weapons and Evidence Recovered
Further searches uncovered a sack containing additional weapons and ammunition, including:
Two Baikal single-barrel guns and a pump-action gun.
A Beretta pistol with three 9mm rounds
34 rounds of 9mm ammunition and 11 rounds in the AK-47
10 extra rounds, 39 BB cartridges, a dagger, a mobile phone, a Honda motorbike, a black mask, and a set of talismans
The suspect’s body has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for identification and autopsy. Authorities are working to track down and apprehend other members of the gang.
DCOP Copposon described the operation as a major success in the Command’s ongoing fight against armed robbery and organized crime in the region, urging the public to provide credible information that could help arrest other criminals.
