President John Dramani Mahama has appointed media entrepreneur Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu as Ghana’s High Commissioner designate to Nigeria.
The announcement was publicly acknowledged by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who congratulated the nominee in a message shared on X on Sunday.
“Congratulations, Baba Sadiq on your well-deserved appointment by President Mahama as High Commissioner designate to the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Mr Ablakwa wrote. “I have no doubt you will hold aloft Ghana’s flag and make the youth of our continent proud.”
Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu is widely known for his influence in the West African entertainment industry and his recent transition into frontline politics.
Over the past decade, he has built a reputation as a creative industry executive and youth-focused entrepreneur.
He is the founder of 3 Media Networks, the parent company of 3Music TV and the 3Music Awards, and served as Chief Executive Officer until 2022. Through the platform, he played a pivotal role in promoting Ghanaian and African music to wider audiences across the continent.
Baba Sadiq also served as a founding director of Boomplay Music in Ghana, helping to expand the digital streaming service’s footprint and user base locally.
In addition, he founded the Wildaland Festival, an annual music and lifestyle event staged at the Shai Hills Forest Reserve, combining entertainment with wildlife conservation advocacy.
His appointment marks a significant shift from entertainment and private enterprise into diplomacy.
His background in youth engagement and cross-border cultural promotion could prove beneficial in strengthening Ghana–Nigeria relations, particularly in the creative arts and digital economy sectors.
In the 2024 general election, Baba Sadiq contested the Okaikwei Central parliamentary seat on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress but narrowly lost to the New Patriotic Party’s Patrick Yaw Boamah after a closely fought race.
With his designation as High Commissioner to Nigeria, he is expected to deepen bilateral cooperation between Accra and Abuja in trade, culture and regional integration within ECOWAS.
Further details regarding his swearing-in and assumption of office are yet to be announced
