A fierce fire tore through a slum at Kissiman Junction near Achimota-Samodak in the early hours of Tuesday morning, claiming the life of a four-month-old baby and leaving dozens of residents without shelter.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire broke out around 4 a.m., rapidly engulfing the densely packed wooden structures that housed several families. Firefighters from the Legon and Abelempke Fire Stations responded swiftly, arriving at the scene at 4:24 a.m., just 12 minutes after receiving the emergency call. However, by then, more than 20 makeshift homes had already been consumed by the flames.
Tragically, a four-month-old infant could not be saved. Firefighters later recovered the child’s charred remains and handed them over to the police for further investigation.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) managed to contain the fire by 5:02 a.m., preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings, including a warehouse.
Many residents lost all their belongings in the blaze, and emergency responders are currently assessing the extent of the damage.
The GNFS has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, as affected families grapple with the devastating loss of both life and property.
Authorities have urged residents to prioritize fire safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Meanwhile, relief efforts are expected to be mobilized to support the displaced families.
