President John Dramani Mahama will this morning, Monday, November 17, 2025, administer the oath of office to Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s new Chief Justice, marking the final step in his elevation to the nation’s highest judicial position.

The swearing-in follows Parliament’s approval of his nomination on November 13, where the House endorsed him by 163 votes to 69.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who has served on the High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court, was nominated on September 23, 2025, with the president describing him as a jurist whose “experience and dedicated service” make him well suited for the role.

He has acted as Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, after the suspension and subsequent removal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

During his vetting on November 10, the incoming Chief Justice pledged to lead with transparency and bipartisanship. He outlined priorities including safeguarding judicial independence, improving access to justice nationwide, and restoring public confidence in the judiciary.

Today’s ceremony officially ushers him into office as the nation’s substantive Chief Justice.
