The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban S.K. Bagbin has declared that the powers of the Judiciary must stop where Parliament’s authority begins, expressing concern over what he sees as constitutional overreach by both the Executive and the Judiciary.
At a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, Speaker Bagbin argued that recent actions by the Executive and Judiciary violate the 1992 Constitution, accusing both branches of attempting to interfere with parliamentary independence.
He suggested that the two branches may be coordinating efforts to weaken Parliament’s autonomy and influence.
“The Judiciary’s powers should not encroach on the authority of Parliament,” Bagbin asserted, warning that any attempts by the Judiciary to influence Parliament’s internal matters would undermine the nation’s democratic foundation.
The Speaker emphasized that Parliament’s independence is a fundamental pillar of Ghana’s constitutional democracy, and he called on the Executive and Judiciary to respect its boundaries to preserve the balance of power.
