The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has been appointed as a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) Task Force on the peaceful resolution of the war between Russia and Ukraine.
The appointment was made by the President of the IPU, who praised Speaker Bagbin for his “integrity, impartiality, and ability to build trust with all parties.” Speaker Bagbin joins seven other distinguished parliamentarians from across the world on the Task Force.
According to the Secretary-General of the IPU, Martin Chungong, the Speaker’s leadership and experience will greatly support the Task Force’s mission to promote dialogue and help find a peaceful solution to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The IPU Task Force was set up in March 2022 as a special group to encourage diplomatic dialogue between the parliaments of Ukraine and Russia. Since its formation, the Task Force has held over thirteen meetings and has visited both Kyiv and Moscow. It also meets with delegations from both countries every six months during IPU Assemblies.
Speaker Bagbin’s inclusion in the group is expected to strengthen efforts to broker peace in Ukraine. As a respected international peace negotiator, he will join other members of the Task Force in attending meetings, holding discussions with Ukrainian and Russian parliamentary delegations, and engaging with government leaders from both sides.
His role is aimed at promoting understanding and helping to bring an end to the conflict.
This appointment highlights Ghana’s growing role in international peace efforts.
The information was contained in an official press release from the Parliamentary Service, signed by David Sebastian Damoah, Director of Media Relations.
